IRCTC refund rules and cancellation charges in 2026

Confirmed, RAC, or waitlist — refund rules differ. Here's the exact 2026 cancellation fee chart, refund timelines, and what to do if your refund is stuck.

· irctc refund rules · ticket cancellation charges · irctc tdr

You booked a train ticket. Plans changed. How much do you actually get back?

The answer depends on three things: your ticket type (confirmed / RAC / WL), the class, and how far before departure you cancel. Here's the full breakdown for 2026, exactly as IRCTC applies it.

The basic refund formula

Refund amount = Total fare − Cancellation charges

Cancellation charges are based on:

  • Confirmed / RAC / WL status
  • Class of travel
  • Time before departure

Refunds are processed to your original payment method within 5–7 business days for cards/UPI, longer for net banking.

Refund chart for confirmed tickets

For confirmed tickets, the cancellation charges are flat plus minimum:

ClassMore than 48 hrs before12–48 hrs before4–12 hrs beforeUnder 4 hrs
1A / EC₹240 + GST25% of fare50% of fareNo refund
2A / FC₹200 + GST25% of fare50% of fareNo refund
3A / 3E / CC₹180 + GST25% of fare50% of fareNo refund
Sleeper₹120 + GST25% of fare50% of fareNo refund
2S₹60 + GST25% of fare50% of fareNo refund

Tip: The "more than 48 hours" cancellation fee is small and flat. If plans are uncertain, cancel early rather than waiting and paying 25%+.

Refund for RAC tickets

If your ticket status is RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation):

  • More than 48 hours before: ₹60 + GST flat per passenger
  • Within 48 hours and up to 30 minutes after chart prep: ₹60 + GST flat
  • After chart prep: No refund unless TDR filed (see below)

RAC refunds are smaller than confirmed because there's no berth-blocking penalty.

Refund for waitlisted tickets

For WL tickets that didn't confirm:

  • The ticket is automatically cancelled at chart preparation (typically 4 hours before journey)
  • Automatic refund to your payment method, no action needed
  • Refund amount = Full fare − ₹60 (clerkage) typically

If your WL converts to RAC or CNF but you don't travel, the RAC/CNF cancellation rules above apply instead.

Refund for Tatkal tickets

This is where it gets harsh.

  • Confirmed Tatkal tickets: No refund on cancellation, regardless of when you cancel
  • RAC/WL Tatkal tickets: Refund only if not confirmed at chart prep — full refund except ₹60 clerkage

This is by design — Tatkal is meant for last-minute travel; the no-refund rule discourages speculation.

Refund for special cases

Train cancelled by Railways

If Indian Railways cancels the train (operational reasons, accidents, weather):

  • Full refund automatically credited to your account
  • No need to file anything
  • Refund within 3–5 business days

Train delayed >3 hours

If your train is delayed by 3+ hours and you choose not to travel:

  • Full refund if you file a TDR (see below) before original departure
  • Same if departure station changed and you can't make it

Missed the train

If you miss the train but had a confirmed ticket:

  • File a TDR within 1 hour of departure (online via IRCTC) to get a partial refund
  • Refund: ~50% if filed in time, else no refund

Passenger no-show

If one passenger of a multi-passenger booking doesn't travel:

  • Tickets for that passenger can be cancelled separately
  • Refund follows the same rules as a regular cancellation

How to cancel a ticket

Online (most common)

  1. Log in to IRCTC → My Account → Booked Ticket History
  2. Find the ticket → click Cancel Ticket
  3. Select passengers (you can cancel some, keep others)
  4. Confirm — refund initiates immediately

Via SMS

Send CAN <PNR> to 139 from your registered mobile. Only works for tickets booked via IRCTC.

Via Counter

For paper tickets (PRS), go to any railway reservation counter with the ticket. Online tickets cannot be cancelled at a counter.

TDR — Ticket Deposit Receipt

The TDR is a refund-claim mechanism for special cases:

  • Train delayed >3 hours and you didn't travel
  • Train cancelled before you could cancel
  • Missed train within 1 hour of departure
  • Coach/berth not available as booked
  • Excess fare charged
  • Any other dispute

How to file TDR

  1. IRCTC → My Account → Booked Ticket History → Action → File TDR
  2. Choose the reason (multiple options)
  3. Add evidence (e.g., delay notification, complaint number)
  4. Submit

TDR timeline

  • Submission: within 30 days of journey (some categories: 24 hours)
  • Processing: 60–90 days typically
  • Refund: 60% to 100% depending on reason

TDR is slow but it's the only way to get money back in disputed cases.

What if your refund is stuck?

Day 0–7: Normal

Most refunds clear within 5–7 business days. Don't escalate before day 7.

Day 7–15: Follow up

Check:

  1. IRCTC → My Account → Refund History — shows IRCTC's side of the refund
  2. Your bank/UPI provider's transaction history
  3. If IRCTC shows "Refunded" but you don't see the money — talk to your bank/payment provider with IRCTC's reference number

Day 15+: Escalate

If still stuck:

  • Raise a complaint at railmadad.indianrailways.gov.in
  • Tweet @RailMinIndia + @IRCTCofficial (they respond faster on Twitter than email)
  • Call IRCTC helpline: 0755-6610661 or 0755-3934141

Common refund mistakes

Mistake 1: Cancelling within 4 hours of departure

Refund drops to ~zero in the last 4 hours. Cancel earlier if you're uncertain.

Mistake 2: Cancelling individual passengers when full cancel is cheaper

Sometimes cancelling 3 of 4 passengers triggers 4 separate cancellation charges, while cancelling all 4 incurs one. Math it out.

Mistake 3: Assuming auto-cancellation handles everything

If your WL ticket doesn't auto-cancel (rare but happens), file a TDR. Don't just wait.

Mistake 4: Trying to cancel an offline ticket online

Tickets booked at PRS counters cannot be cancelled via IRCTC. They must be cancelled at any counter.

Quick reference

  • Confirmed: Cancel >48 hrs out, small flat fee. Within 4 hrs, no refund.
  • RAC: ₹60 flat fee regardless of time (within 30 min of chart prep).
  • WL: Auto-refunded if doesn't confirm — minus ₹60 clerkage.
  • Tatkal confirmed: No refund at all.
  • TDR: Use for delays, cancellations by Railways, disputes.
  • Refund timeline: 5–7 business days; if stuck after 15, escalate via Rail Madad or Twitter.

Pro tip: avoid the refund problem entirely

The biggest refund issue is booking late and cancelling at last minute. Book at the start of the 60-day window when you're sure of plans, and you rarely cancel.

Check when your booking opens → and set a reminder for the morning IRCTC opens. Better planning means fewer cancellations.
