How to use IRCTC Master List to speed up Tatkal booking
The Master List is the single feature that separates fast bookers from slow ones. Here's how to set it up in 5 minutes, and why it shaves 40+ seconds off Tatkal.
If you've ever fumbled to type passenger names, ages, and IDs at 10:00 AM during Tatkal — losing the train as someone else snags the last seat — you've felt the cost of not using the IRCTC Master List.
Setting it up takes 5 minutes. It saves 40+ seconds during every Tatkal booking. Here's the full guide.
What is the Master List?
The Master List is an IRCTC feature that lets you pre-save passenger details (name, age, gender, ID number, food preference, berth preference) once, then select them from a dropdown every time you book.
Without it:
- You manually type each passenger's name, age, gender, ID type and number
- 4 passengers × ~30 seconds each = 2 minutes of typing
- During Tatkal, that's the difference between booking and "Sold Out"
With it:
- You tap a name in the dropdown, IRCTC autofills everything
- 4 passengers = 8 seconds total
How to set it up
Step 1: Log in to IRCTC
Open irctc.co.in → sign in. If you don't have an account, register first (takes ~5 min, needs phone + email verification).
Step 2: Go to "My Profile"
Top-right corner → My Account dropdown → My Profile.
Step 3: Click "Add Passenger to Master List"
You'll see your current Master List (empty if you've never used it). Click Add Passenger.
Step 4: Fill the passenger form
For each passenger, enter:
| Field | Notes |
|---|---|
| Name | Exactly as on ID — must match for boarding |
| Age | As of journey date |
| Gender | Male / Female / Transgender |
| Berth preference | Lower / Middle / Upper / Side Lower / Side Upper / No preference |
| ID type | Aadhaar / Passport / PAN / Voter ID / Driving Licence |
| ID number | Required for ages >18 in some classes |
| Food preference | Veg / Non-veg / No food (Rajdhani/Shatabdi only) |
| Concession | Senior citizen, etc. (optional) |
| Free pass for child | Toggle if <5 yo |
Click Submit. Repeat for everyone in your travel circle — family, frequent companions, regular co-travellers.
Step 5: Verify and re-edit anytime
You can update or remove passengers anytime. Always re-check before peak Tatkal — IRCTC sometimes flags entries with mismatched IDs.
Who to add
A solid Master List has:
- Yourself
- Spouse / partner
- Children (with current ages — update annually)
- Parents (if they travel with you)
- Frequent companions (close friends, in-laws who you book for)
You can also add yourself multiple times with different berth preferences — useful for "want middle/lower" backup options.
How it works during booking
Booking via website
- Go to Train Search → enter origin/destination/date → Search
- Pick your train and class → click Book Now
- On the passenger details page, you'll see a dropdown labeled "Select from Master List"
- Click a passenger → all their fields auto-fill
- Repeat for all passengers
- Move to payment
Booking via IRCTC Rail Connect app
- Open app → tap Train Search → choose train
- Tap Add Passenger
- Toggle "Select from Master List" at the top
- Select each passenger → details auto-populate
- Continue to payment
Why this matters more than any other tip
During Tatkal, the seats are gone within 30–60 seconds. Every second of typing is a second other people are clicking.
Pre-Master List, a 4-passenger family booking takes ~120 seconds of form-fill time. Post-Master List, same booking takes ~8 seconds.
That 112-second saving means you'll book before the train sells out 8 times out of 10. Other tricks (CAPTCHA prep, payment optimization, dual-tab strategy) save maybe 5–10 seconds each. Master List dwarfs them all.
Common Master List mistakes
Mistake 1: Stale ID numbers
Aadhaar / Passport numbers don't change, but Voter IDs do (when you update your address). If your Master List has an old ID, you can be denied boarding.
Fix: Re-verify all IDs in your Master List once a year.
Mistake 2: Wrong name spelling
The name on your Master List must match the ID exactly. "Rajesh K" ≠ "Rajesh Kumar". IRCTC accepts the booking but the TTE can fine you.
Fix: Spelling on Master List must mirror the ID document exactly.
Mistake 3: Outdated age for children
If your child's age in the Master List is 4 but at journey time they're 6, you may have booked a child fare for someone who needs an adult fare.
Fix: Update child ages every birthday.
Mistake 4: Berth preference set to one type only
If you have "Lower Berth" preference and lower berths are sold out, IRCTC will still book whatever's available — but in Tatkal, you have one shot. Strong preference doesn't override availability.
Fix: Set the preference to "No Preference" if any seat is acceptable.
Bonus: combine Master List with other speed-ups
For maximum Tatkal speed, combine Master List with:
- IRCTC iMudra wallet — pre-funded, no OTP delay on payment
- UPI as fallback — if iMudra has issues, UPI is the fastest fallback
- Pre-login at 9:55 AM — keep your session alive
- Pre-select train search URL — bookmark the IRCTC search page with your origin/dest pre-filled
With all of these, your end-to-end Tatkal booking time drops to under 25 seconds.
Frequently asked
Is the Master List linked to my IRCTC account or my phone number?
It's tied to your IRCTC account. Sign in from any device — Master List is available.
Can I delete Master List entries?
Yes — go to My Profile → Master List, find the entry, click delete. The entry stays in past booking records but won't appear in future dropdown.
Does Master List work for Tatkal specifically?
Yes. The Master List dropdown appears on Tatkal booking forms exactly as it does for general booking.
What about Premium Tatkal?
Same. Master List works across General, Tatkal, and Premium Tatkal flows.
Can I share my Master List with family members?
No, each IRCTC account has its own Master List. But you can both add the same passengers — both accounts can book any of them.
Bottom line
The Master List is the single most important Tatkal optimization. Set it up today, while it's not 10:00 AM, in a calm state of mind. The next time Tatkal opens, you'll be saving 100+ seconds and booking before the rush.
