IRCTC's 60-day booking rule, explained with examples

IRCTC opens train ticket reservations 60 days before your journey at 8:00 AM IST. Here's exactly how that works, with real date examples for 2026.

· irctc 60 day rule · advance reservation period · arp irctc

If you're planning a train journey in India, the single most important date you need to know is not the journey itself — it's the day IRCTC opens bookings for it. Miss that morning and the train you wanted is gone in minutes.

This is the 60-day rule. Here's exactly how it works, with examples.

What is the 60-day rule?

The Indian Railways calls it the Advance Reservation Period (ARP). Since 1 November 2024, IRCTC has opened reservations for a journey 60 days before the date of journey, excluding the journey date itself, at 8:00 AM IST sharp.

Before this, the ARP was 120 days. The change was made to reduce ticket cancellations and curb speculative booking.

In one sentence: Pick your journey date. Count back 60 days. That morning at 8:00 AM IST, bookings open.

A concrete example

Say you want to travel on Saturday, 15 August 2026 (Independence Day weekend — busy).

Count back 60 days: Tuesday, 16 June 2026. That morning at 8:00 AM IST, IRCTC opens reservations for your 15 August journey.

If you log in even at 8:01 AM, popular trains may already be sold out for the higher classes. For Rajdhani, Vande Bharat, and Diwali/Eid travel, seats can disappear in under 60 seconds.

Why was it changed from 120 days?

In November 2024, Indian Railways noticed that with a 120-day window:

  • 21% of confirmed tickets were getting cancelled
  • Speculators booked tickets without intent to travel, then cancelled near the date
  • Genuine passengers couldn't get tickets, even on routes with high cancellation rates

Halving the window to 60 days reduced both speculation and waitlist churn. The rule has been in effect since 1 November 2024 for journeys from that date onwards.

Common questions about the 60-day rule

Does the 60-day rule apply to every train?

Most trains follow the 60-day ARP. A few short-distance and special services have a shorter window:

  • Taj Express, Gomti Express, and a handful of short-route Mail/Express trains have a 30-day ARP
  • Some special trains introduced for festivals have varying windows announced via official notice

For 99% of journeys, the 60-day rule is correct.

What about Tatkal?

Tatkal is a separate scheme. It opens one day before journey, from the train's originating station:

  • AC classes (1A, 2A, 3A, CC, EC): 10:00 AM IST
  • Non-AC (Sleeper, 2S): 11:00 AM IST

So if you're travelling on 15 August, Tatkal opens 14 August at 10:00 / 11:00 AM IST.

What if I'm an NRI booking from another timezone?

The 8:00 AM rule is always Asia/Kolkata (IST). It doesn't shift based on where you're booking from. If you're in the US, set an alarm for the IST equivalent in your timezone — and double-check (or use our calculator which converts automatically).

Can I book exactly 60 days before, or does it have to be on the 60th day?

You can book any time on or after the booking-open day, until the day before departure (or until Tatkal opens, in the case of Tatkal). The 60-day mark is the earliest opportunity — but seats on popular trains disappear within minutes of opening.

Why do people say "121 days" or "61 days" sometimes?

This is a counting quirk. Some people include the journey date itself in the count; others don't. The official Indian Railways policy is:

"60 days excluding the date of journey, from the source station."

So if you travel on day X, booking opens on day X − 60.

The booking morning: what actually happens

At 7:58 AM IST on the day booking opens:

  • IRCTC homepage typically shows a "Service Unavailable" notice
  • This is normal — the system is preparing to flip the switch
  • Don't panic, don't refresh aggressively

At 8:00:00 AM IST:

  • The "Plan My Travel" form becomes active
  • Seats unlock instantly
  • The first 30–90 seconds are the highest-traffic window in IRCTC's day

Tip from experienced bookers:

  • Have your IRCTC Master List ready (passenger details pre-saved) — this saves 30+ seconds at the form
  • Use the IRCTC Rail Connect app instead of the website during peak — app traffic flow is often more stable
  • Keep your payment method (UPI / wallet / card) pre-authenticated

Edge cases worth knowing

Special trains and festival specials

Indian Railways announces special trains during Diwali, Holi, and other peak seasons. These often have separate ARP rules announced by IRCTC notification. Always check enquiry.indianrail.gov.in for the specific train's window.

Foreign Tourist Quota (FTQ)

International passengers booking with their passport via FTQ have a slightly different process — bookings can open earlier in some cases. FTQ tickets are booked at IRCTC International Tourist Bureau counters or via authorized agents.

Tatkal-only trains

Some trains have a high Tatkal allocation. If a train opens at 8:00 AM and shows few general seats, often more become available the next morning at 10:00 / 11:00 AM through the Tatkal channel.
